What the SAT Math Section Actually Tests

28% of the test. This is where students who struggle usually have gaps:

- Radical and rational expressions

The name sounds intimidating. The actual problems aren't that hard once you understand the underlying concepts. Most students who struggle here just haven't seen enough practice problems.

The remaining 10% includes geometry, trigonometry basics, and circles with complex numbers. If you're not planning a STEM major, you might not need deep trig knowledge—but you still need to know the basics.
SAT Math Format: What You're Actually Facing
The Math section comes in two parts:
- No Calculator portion: 25 minutes, 20 questions
- Calculator portion: 55 minutes, 38 questions
Total: 80 minutes for 58 questions. That's roughly 83 seconds per question on average—but the no-calculator section requires faster work.
