Pixma Squared Walkthrough- Complete Setup Guide
What Is Pixma Setup and Why You Need to Get It Right
Pixma is Canon's line of home and office inkjet printers. The setup process is the same across most models — MG series, TS series, G series, PRO series. If you bought a new Pixma, this guide covers everything from opening the box to printing your first page.
Most people screw up the setup because they skip steps or install drivers wrong. Don't be most people.
Unboxing Your Pixma Printer
Take everything out of the box. You need:
- The printer itself
- Power cord
- INK CARTRIDGES — don't skip these
- Setup CD (or download link)
- User manual
Remove all the orange tape and protective materials. Check the paper tray and ink cartridge compartment. People miss this stuff constantly and then wonder why the printer jams on first use.
Initial Power-On and Language Setup
Plug in the power cord. Hit the power button. The screen will ask you to select a language — use the arrow keys or touchscreen to choose yours.
If your printer doesn't have a screen, don't panic. Some budget models don't. You set everything up through your computer instead.
Installing the Ink Cartridges
Open the front panel. Wait for the cartridge carriage to stop moving. Take your ink cartridges out of the packaging. Remove the protective tape — there's usually orange or yellow tape on the contacts.
Match the colors to the slots. Black goes in black, color goes in color. Push each cartridge until it clicks. Don't force it.
Close the panel. The printer will initialize — this takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the model.
Loading Paper
Pull out the rear paper tray. Slide the paper guides to the edges. Drop in a stack of plain white paper — don't exceed the limit line. Push the guides snug against the paper.
Some Pixma models have a front paper tray instead. Same process, different location.
The printer will probably ask you to print an alignment page. Do it. This calibrates the print head and directly affects print quality.
Connecting Your Pixma to WiFi
This is where most people get stuck. Here are your options:
WPS Push Button Method (Easiest)
Check if your router has a WPS button — it's usually on the back or side. Press the WPS button on your router, then within 2 minutes press and hold the WiFi button on your printer until the power light blinks.
Wait for the WiFi light to stop blinking and stay solid. That's it.
Canon PRINT App Method
Download the Canon PRINT app from the App Store or Google Play. Open it, tap "Add Printer," and follow the on-screen instructions. The app walks you through connecting to your WiFi network.
This method works for phones, tablets, and computers.
USB Connection (No WiFi)
Use a USB cable if you don't need wireless. Connect the printer to your computer, then install the drivers. You can't use the Canon PRINT app with a USB-only setup.
Installing Drivers and Software
You have two choices:
- Use the included CD — insert it into your computer and follow the prompts. Only works if your computer has a CD drive.
- Download from Canon's website — go to support.canon.com, search your model, and download the latest drivers. This is the better option because you get updated software.
During installation, you'll see options for:
- MP Drivers (print and scan)
- Scan Utility
- My Printer (utility software)
- Network Tool (for WiFi setup)
Install all of them. Don't skip the scan utility if you ever need to scan documents.
Pixma Setup for Mac vs Windows
Windows users: run the setup.exe file. Accept the license agreement. Choose your connection type (USB or network). The installer finds your printer automatically over WiFi.
Mac users: run the .pkg file. After installation, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Your Pixma should appear in the list. If it doesn't, click the + button and add it manually.
Mac drivers sometimes lag behind Windows drivers. Check Canon's support page for updates if something isn't working right.
Mobile Printing Setup
Pixma printers support several mobile printing methods:
- Canon PRINT app — print photos, documents, scan to your phone
- AirPrint — for iPhones, iPads, MacBooks without installing anything
- Mopria — for Android devices without the Canon app
For AirPrint, make sure your Pixma and iOS device are on the same WiFi network. Open a photo or document, tap the share icon, and select your printer.
Common Pixma Setup Problems
Printer Not Found on Network
Check that your printer and computer are on the same WiFi network. Restart both. If that doesn't work, use a USB cable to set up the printer, then reconfigure WiFi through the printer's settings menu.
Cartridge Errors
If the printer says the cartridges aren't recognized, remove them and reinsert. Make sure you removed all the protective tape. Clean the contacts with a dry cloth if needed.
Paper Jams on First Use
Make sure you're using the right paper size setting in your print dialog. Check that the paper guides aren't too tight. Use plain paper until you get everything working — specialty paper causes more jams during setup.
WiFi Light Won't Stop Blinking
The printer is still trying to connect. Wait up to 5 minutes. If it never stops, your WiFi password might be wrong. Re-enter it through the printer's control panel.

Updating Your Pixma Firmware

When to Call Canon Support
If you've gone through setup twice and the printer still won't connect, something is wrong with the hardware. Don't keep reinstalling drivers hoping it fixes itself.
Canon's support line is 1-800-OK-CANON. Have your model number ready.
