Fraction Percent to Decimal- Conversion Guide

Understanding Fractions, Percentages, and Decimals

These three things are the same thing expressed differently. A fraction like 1/2 equals 50%, which equals 0.5. That's it. Nothing fancy. Fractions show parts of a whole using a numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number). Percentages show parts out of 100. Decimals use place value based on tenths and hundredths. Once you see they're interchangeable, conversions become simple arithmetic instead of confusing math problems.

How to Convert Fractions to Percentages

Multiply the fraction by 100 and you get the percentage. The formula: (numerator ÷ denominator) × 100 = %

Step-by-Step Example

Convert 3/5 to a percentage:

  1. Divide 3 by 5 → 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6
  2. Multiply by 100 → 0.6 × 100 = 60%

That's it. 3/5 = 60%.

More Examples

When you get a repeating decimal like 0.666..., round to 2 decimal places for practical use.

How to Convert Percentages to Decimals

Divide the percentage by 100. Or just move the decimal point two places to the left.

Examples:

For whole numbers: 45% becomes 0.45. The decimal moves from after the 45 to two places left.

How to Convert Fractions to Decimals

Divide the numerator by the denominator. That's the whole method.

Examples:

If the division doesn't come out even, keep dividing until you see a repeating pattern or round to 3-4 decimal places.

Mental Math Shortcuts

For denominators of 10 or 100: The decimal point does the work for you. 3/10 = 0.3. 47/100 = 0.47.

For common fractions: Memorize the big ones (1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 3/4) and derive others from them. If you know 1/4 = 0.25, then 3/4 is just 0.25 × 3 = 0.75.

For percentages: Think of 10% as dividing by 10, 1% as dividing by 100. 35% = 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting to multiply by 100 when converting fraction to percentage. The division gives you a decimal, not the percentage.

Moving the decimal the wrong direction when converting percentage to decimal. Left, not right. 50% is 0.50, not 50.0.

Confusing the numerator and denominator in the division step. Always divide numerator by denominator.

Getting Started: Practice Problems

Convert these fractions to percentages and decimals:

  1. 2/5
  2. 4/5
  3. 1/8
  4. 5/6

Answers:

  1. 2/5 = 0.4 = 40%
  2. 4/5 = 0.8 = 80%
  3. 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5%
  4. 5/6 = 0.833... = 83.33%

If you got those right, you understand the conversions. If not, go back and check your division and multiplication steps.
