Fraction Multiplication- Step-by-Step Guide
What Fraction Multiplication Actually Is
Fraction multiplication is one of the easier operations in math. No finding common denominators. No borrowing. Just multiply across.
If you can't multiply fractions, you can't do algebra, cook with recipes, or calculate discounts. So yeah, it matters.
The Basic Rule
Multiply the numerators together. Multiply the denominators together. That's it.
For two fractions a/b and c/d:
(a ร c) / (b ร d)
Simple Example
1/2 ร 3/4 = ?
1 ร 3 = 3 (numerator)
2 ร 4 = 8 (denominator)
Answer: 3/8
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Multiply the Numerators
Take the top number of the first fraction and multiply it by the top number of the second fraction.
Example: 2/5 ร 3/7
2 ร 3 = 6
Step 2: Multiply the Denominators
Take the bottom number of the first fraction and multiply it by the bottom number of the second fraction.
5 ร 7 = 35
Step 3: Write Your Answer
6/35
That's your unsimplified answer. Which brings us to the next step.
Step 4: Simplify If Possible
Check if the numerator and denominator share a common factor. If they do, divide both by that number.
Example: 6/12
Both divisible by 6
6 รท 6 = 1
12 รท 6 = 2
Simplified: 1/2
Cross-Canceling: The Shortcut
You can simplify before multiplying. This keeps numbers smaller and avoids big fractions you then have to reduce.
Look for factors that cancel across numerators and denominators.
Example With Cross-Canceling
4/9 ร 3/8
Normally you'd get 12/72 and simplify to 1/6. But check:
4 and 8 share a factor of 4. Change 4/9 ร 3/8 to:
1/9 ร 3/2 (divided both by 4)
Now multiply: 1 ร 3 = 3, 9 ร 2 = 18
3/18 simplifies to 1/6
Same answer. Smaller numbers. Less work.
Multiplying Mixed Numbers
Mixed numbers need to be converted to improper fractions first.
Conversion Formula
(Whole number ร denominator) + numerator = new numerator
Denominator stays the same
Example
2 1/3 ร 1/4
Convert 2 1/3:
(2 ร 3) + 1 = 7
7/3
Now multiply: 7/3 ร 1/4 = 7/12
Can't simplify 7/12, so that's your answer.
Common Mistakes That Will Kill Your Answer
- Forgetting to simplify โ 16/24 looks wrong. 2/3 looks right. Always check.
- Cross-canceling wrong โ You can only cancel a numerator with a denominator. Not numerator with numerator or denominator with denominator.
- Leaving mixed numbers as mixed numbers โ Convert first. Always.
- Multiplying denominators when you should add them โ Only multiply when the problem says multiply.
Practice Problems
Try these. Answers at the bottom.
- 1/3 ร 1/2 = ?
- 3/4 ร 2/5 = ?
- 5/6 ร 3/10 = ? (Simplify)
- 2 1/2 ร 1/3 = ?
Quick Reference Table
| Problem | Step 1 | Step 2 | Raw Answer | Simplified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 ร 1/4 | 1 ร 1 = 1 | 2 ร 4 = 8 | 1/8 | 1/8 |
| 3/5 ร 2/7 | 3 ร 2 = 6 | 5 ร 7 = 35 | 6/35 | 6/35 |
| 4/9 ร 3/8 | 4 ร 3 = 12 | 9 ร 8 = 72 | 12/72 | 1/6 |
| 2/3 ร 5/6 | 2 ร 5 = 10 | 3 ร 6 = 18 | 10/18 | 5/9 |
How to Get Better at This
Practice with real numbers until it clicks. Here's your drill:
- Start with fractions where denominators are small (2, 3, 4, 5)
- Always simplify your answer
- Time yourself โ goal is under 30 seconds per problem
- Check your work with a calculator until you're confident
Answers to Practice Problems
