Addition means putting numbers together. That's it. No fancy vocabulary needed for a 5-year-old.
Start with combinations that equal 10, because those are the most useful. Kids who know their "number bonds" to 10 can solve almost any basic addition problem in their head.

- 1 + 9
- 2 + 8
- 3 + 7
- 4 + 6
- 5 + 5
Drill these until they're automatic. Use fingers, blocks, or whatever toy works. Speed isn't the goal yet — understanding is.

Once number bonds click, move to other combinations:
- 2 + 3 = 5
- 4 + 2 = 6
- 1 + 6 = 7
- 3 + 4 = 7
Notice some problems have the same answer. That's called a sum. 3 + 4 and 2 + 5 both equal 7. Point this out — it helps kids see patterns instead of memorizing 100 separate facts.
Subtraction Up to 10: Taking Away
Subtraction is addition's opposite. You're taking away, not adding. Some kids get this confused at first.
Use physical objects first. "You have 7 grapes. I eat 3. How many left?" This makes the concept concrete.

Counting errors: Skipping numbers or double-counting. Slow them down. Accuracy before speed.
Forgetting to carry/borrow: Won't happen if you stick to numbers under 10. That's why this limit exists.
Guessing instead of calculating: If they answer 3 + 4 with "7" but can't explain why, they're probably memorizing. Make them show their work.
How to Practice Without Losing Your Mind
worksheets get old fast. Here are alternatives that don't feel like homework:
- Card games: Pick two cards, add or subtract them
- Real life math: "We need 8 apples. Grab some. How many more?"

Keep sessions under 10 minutes for kids under 6. Attention spans aren't there yet.
Getting Started: Your 5-Day Plan
Day 1: Teach number bonds to 10 with physical objects. No paper yet.
Day 2: Review bonds. Add one new addition fact family (like 3 + __ = 7).
Day 3: Introduce subtraction using the same objects. Show the inverse relationship.
Day 4: Practice mixed problems. Start with easy ones (1+1, 5-2) before moving to harder ones.
Day 5: Quick review. If they struggle, go back to Day 1 materials. Rushing doesn't work.
Most kids need 2-4 weeks to truly master these basics. Some take longer. That's fine. The time you spend now saves years of struggle later.
When to Move Beyond 10
Don't rush this. Your kid is ready to move on when they can:
- Solve any addition problem within 10 in under 5 seconds
- Solve any subtraction problem within 10 in under 5 seconds
- Explain why 4 + 3 = 7 using objects or drawings
If they can do these three things, they're ready for numbers up to 20. If not, keep practicing. No shame in it.
