What Exactly Are Protists?
Protists are eukaryotic organisms that don't fit into the animal, plant, or fungus categories. That's it. That's the definition. Scientists essentially created this group as a catch-all for anything that doesn't belong elsewhere.
The word "protist" comes from the Greek meaning "first." Early biologists thought these were the simplest, most primitive life forms. We now know that's not accurate, but the name stuck.

Protips: Diatoms are easiest to find—they're everywhere. Amoebas require patience and slightly warmer samples. Paramecia are fast and will swim right out of your field of view repeatedly.
