Why Subscripts Matter in Chemical Formulas
Chemical formulas like H2O, CO2, or C6H12O6 look wrong in plain text. The numbers sit at the same level as letters, and anyone reading your document immediately knows you don't know how to format properly.
That's the quick version. Here's how to actually do it.
Method 1: Keyboard Shortcuts (Fastest Way)
This is the method you should memorize. It's the fastest way to toggle subscript on and off.
- Windows: Press Ctrl + = to turn subscript on. Press it again to turn it off.
- Mac: Press Ctrl + Cmd + - to toggle subscript.
Select the text you want to change first, then hit the shortcut. Or hit the shortcut first and start typingβWord will keep subscript mode active until you press it again.
Method 2: The Ribbon Button
If you prefer clicking:
- Go to the Home tab in Word
- Look in the Font section on the right side
- Click the small arrow in the bottom-right corner of that section
- Find the checkbox labeled Subscript
- Check it, then click OK
You can also add the subscript button directly to your Quick Access Toolbar for one-click access. Right-click the button and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar."
Method 3: Font Dialog Box
Another way to access subscript:
- Select your text
- Press Ctrl + D (Windows) or Cmd + D (Mac)
- The Font dialog opens
- Check the Subscript box
- Click OK
This method is useful when you need to adjust other font settings at the same time.
Method 4: Unicode Characters (No Word Required)
You can type subscripts using Unicode characters directly. This works in any text field, not just Word.

Method 5: Word's Equation Editor
For complex chemical formulas, Word's built-in equation tool handles subscripts automatically:
- Go to Insert β Equation
- Type your formula normally, using underscore for subscripts
- For example, type H_2O to get H2O
The equation editor is overkill for simple formulas but useful if you're writing lots of chemistry content.

How To: Creating Common Chemical Formulas
Water (H2O):
- Type "H2O"
- Select the "2"
- Press Ctrl + =
Glucose (C6H12O6):
- Type "C6H12O6"
