What Is a 2-Step Equation?
A 2-step linear equation is an algebraic equation that requires exactly two operations to solve. That's it. No more, no less.
These equations look like this:
3x + 5 = 20
or
x/4 - 7 = 3
You isolate the variable using inverse operations. You do the math twice. That's the whole concept.
Vocabulary You Need to Know First
Before touching a single equation, memorize these terms:
- Variable โ the letter (usually x, but it could be anything)
- Constant โ the plain numbers with no variable attached
- Coefficient โ the number multiplied by the variable
- Inverse operations โ operations that undo each other (addition/subtraction, multiplication/division)
- Isolate the variable โ get the variable alone on one side of the equals sign
Skip this step and you'll confuse yourself halfway through every problem.
The Two Steps (It's Not Complicated)
Here's the process:
- Step 1: Undo addition or subtraction
- Step 2: Undo multiplication or division
Always work in reverse order of operations. PEMDAS does operations left to right โ you do the opposite.
Example 1: Solving 3x + 5 = 20
Equation: 3x + 5 = 20
Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides
3x + 5 - 5 = 20 - 5
3x = 15
Step 2: Divide both sides by 3
3x รท 3 = 15 รท 3
x = 5
Done. Two steps.
Example 2: Solving x/4 - 7 = 3
Equation: x/4 - 7 = 3
Step 1: Add 7 to both sides
x/4 - 7 + 7 = 3 + 7
x/4 = 10
Step 2: Multiply both sides by 4
x/4 ร 4 = 10 ร 4
x = 40
Notice the pattern. Whatever operation is attached to the variable, do the opposite first.
Example 3: Negative Coefficients
Equation: -2x + 9 = 1
Step 1: Subtract 9 from both sides
-2x + 9 - 9 = 1 - 9
-2x = -8
Step 2: Divide both sides by -2
-2x รท -2 = -8 รท -2
x = 4
Negative divided by negative gives a positive answer. Don't panic at negative numbers โ just follow the steps.
How to Check Your Answer
Plug your answer back into the original equation. If it works, you're right.
Example: x = 5 in 3x + 5 = 20
3(5) + 5 = 20
15 + 5 = 20 โ
20 = 20. Correct.
Do this every time. It takes 10 seconds and catches most mistakes immediately.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Doing operations in the wrong order โ always undo addition/subtraction first
- Forgetting to apply the operation to both sides โ whatever you do to one side, do to the other
- Dropping negative signs โ they don't disappear just because you don't like them
- Not simplifying constants โ 5 + 3 is 8, not left as 5 + 3
- Skipping the check โ lazy checkers get wrong answers
