Precolonial maps from Mesoamerica weren't just geography. They were cosmology, history, and political power wrapped in one image. European explorers called them primitive when they first saw them. They were dead wrong.

The Fejérváry-Mayer Map (circa 15th century) shows a circular universe with the four previous world ages positioned around a central tree. This wasn't meant to be geographically accurate. It was meant to be cosmologically true.

These maps used symbolic representations. Cardinal directions had specific colors and meanings. The center of a cosmological map often represented the axis mundi—the sacred center of the universe. This concept appears across Maya, Aztec, and Mixtec cultures with variations.

Itinerary and Route Maps

The Tro-Cortesianus (Madrid Codex)

Spanish observers noted that Maya priests could predict eclipses centuries in advance. These maps show the mathematical systems that made those predictions possible.

The Fejérváry-Mayer Map

One of the oldest known maps from Mesoamerica. Shows the cosmos as a series of nested circles with the thirteen heavens above and nine underworlds below. The earth sits at the center as a square surrounded by water.

This map makes no pretense of geographical accuracy. It shows how Maya people understood their place in the universe. The four previous world ages appear as circles at the compass points.

The Map of Teotihuacan

Discovered in the 1960s during construction work in Mexico City. Dated to approximately 600 CE, making it one of the oldest surviving maps from Mesoamerica. It shows the city of Teotihuacan from a bird's-eye perspective.

The map is remarkable for its accuracy in depicting the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun, and the Pyramid of the Moon. Buildings are shown with their relative sizes preserved. Streets and plazas appear in their correct positions.

Why Most Maps Were Destroyed

The Spanish conquest brought systematic destruction of indigenous documents. Bishop Diego de Landa burned thousands of Maya texts in 1562. He called them "superstitious and false." The Vatican supported these actions as necessary for saving souls.

The logic was simple: indigenous maps contained indigenous religion. Destroying them was destroying the infrastructure of pagan worship. The Spanish saw this as a moral imperative.
