What Is Nerve Classification?

Nerve classification is how anatomists sort the body's nerves into categories. The structural classification system focuses on what the nerves are made of — specifically, how they're built and what they contain.

Three main categories exist: cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and autonomic nerves. Each has a different job and a different physical makeup.

The Three Structural Types

Cranial Nerves

These 12 pairs of nerves exit the brain directly. They're labeled CN I through CN XII. Some carry only sensory fibers. Others carry only motor fibers. A few do both.

There are 31 pairs. They exit the spinal cord between vertebrae. Every spinal nerve is mixed — meaning it carries both sensory and motor signals. No exceptions.

Structural Classification by Fiber Type

Nerves also get classified by what kind of fibers they contain. This matters for function.

This Erlanger-Gasser classification system groups fibers by diameter and myelination. Thicker fibers conduct faster. Myelinated fibers conduct faster than unmyelinated ones.

Myelin is a fatty sheath that wraps around certain nerve fibers. It acts like insulation on a wire.

Most peripheral nerves contain both types. The ratio determines overall conduction speed.

How to Classify a Nerve: Getting Started

When you need to classify an unfamiliar nerve, work through this checklist:

  1. Where does it originate? Brain = cranial nerve. Spinal cord = spinal nerve.
  2. What fibers does it contain? Sensory only, motor only, or mixed?
  3. What is its function? Voluntary movement, involuntary control, or special sense?
  4. What fiber type dominates? Check diameter and myelin presence.

Example: The vagus nerve (CN X). Originates from the brain stem. Contains mixed fibers. Function includes parasympathetic control of heart, lungs, and digestive tract. Dominated by B and C fibers.

Clinical Relevance

Knowing structural classification helps diagnose nerve damage. Different fiber types respond differently to injury:

Nerve conduction studies use this classification. The test measures how fast signals travel through different fiber types. Abnormal results point to specific structural problems.
