What Bacon Actually Did

Francis Bacon didn't invent science. What he did was more important—he gave it a rulebook. In the early 1600s, science was a mess of guesswork, superstition, and Aristotle-worship. Bacon looked at the chaos and said: we can do better.

Philosophical systems that are really just elaborate stories. People treat these frameworks like scripts—they perform the logic without questioning the premises. Systems are seductive. They feel complete. They're not.

The Method Itself

What Went Wrong

Bacon's method wasn't perfect. He underestimated the role of hypothesis in science. You can't observe your way to truth without some framework guiding what you look at. Pure observation without theory is blind—but Bacon went too far in the opposite direction from his contemporaries.

He also thought the method could be mechanized. Create the right tables, follow the right procedure, and truth emerges automatically. That's not how it works. Creativity and insight still matter. Bacon just wanted people to stop pretending their intuitions were divine revelation.

How to Actually Use Bacon's Approach

You don't need a laboratory. Bacon's core ideas work for any evidence-based decision.

No vague inquiries. "Does this work?" is useless. "Does X reduce Y by measurable amounts under Z conditions?" is a real question. Specificity kills noise.

Why This Still Matters

Bacon's idols are still running the show. Politicians invoke tribal thinking. Influencers exploit cave biases. Jargon-filled reports hide market idols. People still build elaborate systems that ignore inconvenient facts.

The method itself got absorbed into scientific practice and evolved. But the core insight remains: observation beats authority, evidence beats argument, and intellectual honesty is non-negotiable.

If you're making decisions based on gut feelings, inherited beliefs, or rhetorical appeals—Bacon would say you're worshipping idols. The alternative is tedious. It requires work. It requires admitting you're wrong sometimes. That's the price of actually knowing things.
